Poderíamos discutir horas a fio sobre os mecanismos da indústria cultural que levam a um produto de massa se sobrepor e esmagar manifestações tradicionais e as conseqüências disso. Contudo, a preservação do patrimônio cultural tradicional não se resolve forçando o povão a consumir um baião tradicional a um tecnobrega, um grupo de cateretê a uma dupla sertaneja, um samba de raiz a um funk proibidão.

Também ouvi coisas do tipo: “esse povo precisa de um banho de Chico Buarque”. Na opinião destes, de “cultura de qualidade”. A clivagem entre o popular e o erudito (e a ignorância de fundir o erudito com o bom) é apenas parte dessa discussão. Esse tipo de pensamento, com a reafirmação de símbolos para separar “nós” da plebe, expressa mais preconceito de classe do que qualquer outra coisa. E, em um ímpeto quase jesuítico, a necessidade de catequisar vem à tona, para trazê-lo à nossa fé. Não que eles poderão entender tudo, mas poderão, pelo menos, deixar o estado de barbárie em que se encontram.

BRITAIN appears to be evolving into the first modern soft totalitarian state. As a sometime teacher of political science and international law, I do not use the term totalitarian loosely.

There are no concentration camps or gulags but there are thought police with unprecedented powers to dictate ways of thinking and sniff out heresy, and there can be harsh punishments for dissent.

Nikolai Bukharin claimed one of the Bolshevik Revolution’s principal tasks was “to alter people’s actual psychology”. Britain is not Bolshevik, but a campaign to alter people’s psychology and create a new Homo britannicus is under way without even a fig leaf of disguise.

The Government is pushing ahead with legislation that will criminalise politically incorrect jokes, with a maximum punishment of up to seven years’ prison. The House of Lords tried to insert a free-speech amendment, but Justice Secretary Jack Straw knocked it out. It was Straw who previously called for a redefinition of Englishness and suggested the “global baggage of empire” was linked to soccer violence by “racist and xenophobic white males”. He claimed the English “propensity for violence” was used to subjugate Ireland, Scotland and Wales, and that the English as a race were “potentially very aggressive”.

A Brazilian archbishop says all those who helped a child rape victim secure an abortion are to be excommunicated from the Catholic Church.

The girl, aged nine, who lives in the north-eastern state of Pernambuco, became pregnant with twins.

It is alleged that she had been sexually assaulted over a number of years by her stepfather.

The excommunication applies to the child’s mother and the doctors involved in the procedure.

The pregnancy was terminated on Wednesday.

Abortion is only permitted in Brazil in cases of rape and where the mother’s life is at risk and doctors say the girl’s case met both these conditions.

This disparity is strikingly evident in income data compiled by Citigroup, which shows that the top 1 percent of U.S. households now account for as much of the nation’s total wealth—7 percent—as they did in 1913, when monopolistic business practices were the order of the day. Their net worth is now greater than that of the bottom 90 percent of the nation’s households combined. The top 20 percent of taxpayers realized nearly three quarters of all income gains from 1979 to 2000.

DETROIT — This city has not always been a gentle place, but a series of events over the past few, frigid days causes one to wonder how cold the collective heart has grown.

It starts with a phone call made by a man who said his friend found a dead body in the elevator shaft of an abandoned building on the city’s west side.

A MAN’S body was found yesterday almost 48 hours after flood waters swept him from a bridge into a crocodile infested river.

The 48-year-old was washed away as he attempted to cross the bridge with friends about 5pm last Friday.

It is understood he was found after police search teams noticed crocodiles gathering near a tree about 1.5km downstream from the bridge.
